New York, NY (May 11, 2020) – NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation) is proud to a announce that the Honorable John P. DiBlasi, J.S.C. (Ret.), has been invited by Markel Insurance Company to present a virtual continuing legal education program entitled Effectively Managing the Negotiation Process. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, May 19th.

Attendees will learn best practices and pitfalls that occur during mediations and how to maximize the possibility of achieving a resolution through the mediation process. Issues unique to the virtual ADR process in terms of negotiations and security unique to videoconferencing technology will also be addressed.

Other topics to be discussed include:

  • making the decision to mediate;
  • when is there the right time and how to approach my adversary;
  • the role of the ADR provider:
  • selecting the editor;
  • the importance of pre-hearing submissions;
  • the mediation session; opening statements; preliminary negotiations; joint breakout sessions; reaching an impasse; settlement agreements;
  • common errors that impact settlement efforts; and
  • addressing collateral issues; insurance coverage and apportionment of liability.

Hon. John P. DiBlasi is the former presiding Justice of the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. During his illustrious career, he has arbitrated and mediated over 3,000 cases with an ADR practice that centers on resolving Commercial, International, Finance, Employment, Entertainment, Land Use, and Professional Malpractice matters. In 2020, Judge DiBlasi was ranked a Top Three Mediator in the United States by The National Law Journal Annual Best of Survey for the seventh straight year (#1, 4 years in a row) and was voted a Top Ten Mediator in The New York Law Journal Annual Best of Survey for the tenth consecutive year.  He was also voted the #1 Mediator in the country by the 2019 Corporate Counsel Best of Survey for the second year in a row and for the third straight year, was named a National Law Journal Alternative Dispute Resolution Champion, as part of a select group of only 46 nationwide.  Judge DiBlasi has consistently been designated a Super Lawyer and holds an AV Preeminent Peer Rating from Martindale-Hubbell in both Alternative Dispute Resolution and Litigation – a distinction given only to those who possess the highest ethical standards and professional ability.
