Melvin L. Schweitzer (Ret.) will join a New York City Bar Association (NYCBA) panel discussion entitled The Commercial Division: Past, Present and Future on Monday, February 25th at 6:00 p.m. The 90-minute presentation will be held at the New York City Bar Association offices at 42 West 44th Street, New York. NY.
Hon.Schweitzer will be joined by a distinguished panel of judges that include, Hon. Eileen Bransten (Ret.), Hon. Shirley W. Kornreich (Ret.) and Hon. Charles E. Ramos (Ret.). The panel will engage in a wide-ranging discussion addressing the relationship between the court and the business community, the features that make the court unique, key doctrinal developments, recent rule changes and other innovations, and the future trajectory of the court. The discussion will be moderated by the Hon. Carolyn Demarest (Ret.).
Additionally, this is a watershed year for the Commercial Division, New York County, as Justice Kornreich, Justice Bransten and Justice Ramos will each be leaving the bench.
Hon. Melvin L. Schweitzer (Ret.) remarkable and distinguished legal career includes a decade of service on the New York State bench, six of those years as Acting New York State Supreme Court Justice, First Judicial Department, Commercial Division. He served with distinction on this specialized court, handling all manner of complex commercial cases. Prior to his judicial service, Hon. Schweitzer practiced law for more than 30 years, primarily as a Senior Partner, for a prominent New York law firm, and focused on corporate and securities law, public finance and insurer insolvency. He is a member of NAM's (National Arbitration and Mediation) Hearing Officer Panel and is available to arbitrate and mediate cases nationwide.
