The general maritime law of the United States traces its historic roots to legal principles that predate the founding of the country. So critical was this area of the law to a fledgling nation that the founding fathers agreed that federal courts, not state courts, would exercise admiralty jurisdiction and specifically incorporated same into Article III of the Constitution.
