New York, NY (July 2, 2018) – NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation), one of the nation's leading providers of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), is proud to announce that NAM neutral Susan Hernandez, Esq. will present on Diversity in the Workplace at The Scales of Justice Academy, Inc.'s 10th annual Summer Academy session. Ms. Hernandez will provide Academy attendees – comprised of under-served female high school students – with an unmatched opportunity to learn about the advantages, challenges and real-life experiences related to diversity in the legal profession. The session will be held at Fordham University School of Law in New York, NY on Tuesday, July 10th. The Summer Academy will commence on Monday, July 9th and continue through Friday, July 27th.
Over the last decade, the Academy has graduated over three hundred, diverse female high school students who have expressed an interest in the legal profession. Those who have successfully completed the Academy's sessions have enrolled, thereafter, in colleges, universities and law schools throughout the United States. The Academy was established in 2009 by the Honorable La Tia W. Martin, who recognized early on that many young women from diverse backgrounds were not receiving the training and support to be guided through the “pipeline” entrance into universities and ultimately law school. She created the Academy to provide these women with the early life skills necessary to succeed academically in law school.
Renowned for her advocacy, legal acumen and insight, Ms. Hernandez is a staunch supporter of women's rights and diversity in the workplace and frequently lectures on ways to establish procedures and policies to increase the appointment of women and minorities in the courtroom and as arbitrators and mediators in ADR. Ms. Hernandez is a highly regarded neutral at NAM and was voted the #1 mediator in New York State in the 2017 New York Law Journal Reader Rankings Survey and was ranked a Top 10 Mediator for the past 3 years in that same survey. She has also been named a National Law Journal Alternative Dispute Resolution Champion for the second year in a row in 2017. She has mediated disputes involving contracts, discrimination, employment, personal injury, real property/partition, and sexual harassment.
Roy Israel, NAM's founder and CEO stated, “Who better than Susan to volunteer her time and address these young women about diversity, inclusion and elimination of bias in the workplace. I am certain that everyone who attends the Academy session will benefit from her passion and personal insight on the subject. The NAM Gives Back program recognizes how education is so vitally important to the growth and understanding of the dispute resolution process, and presentations like these are an excellent way to enlighten and educate students as well as those in the legal community on advancing the discussion of these important issues. I would like to thank the Academy for inviting Susan to speak and I am certain the young people who attend will be enlightened by Susan's knowledge and experience.”
The NAM Gives Back program was established to develop partnerships and support organizations to encourage the advancement of effective, efficient and balanced ADR initiatives as well as designed to drive positive change in communities both locally and on a national scale.
