Savino has extensive experience in complex commercial and insurance coverage litigation having spent his legal career litigating in both trial and appellate courts throughout the United States. Most recently, in 2018 Mr. Savino received the distinction from Chambers USA as a “Notable Practitioner” in insurance coverage claims and litigation. As a neutral, he brings a wealth of legal and business experience to the resolution of even the most complex of matters.
Mr. Savino has served as counsel for numerous insurance companies relating to insurance coverage claims and lawsuits ranging from intellectual property liability coverage disputes and business torts to national environmental and primary/excess insurer disputes. His experience also includes handling matters involving municipalities and legislative bodies and working with some of the most well-known, respected law firms throughout the United States. By way of example, Mr. Savino served as lead counsel, representing the County of Nassau in the County’s suit opposing financial oversight by the Nassau Interim Finance Authority, in addition to representing the County in various matters involving legislation and taxation issues. Other high profile cases include his representation of insurers in the September 11th World Trade Center Liability Coverage Litigation, the BPA–Plastic Products Coverage Litigation, and Shell Oil Company v. Aetna Casualty and Surety Company. He has served as appellate counsel in a variety of municipal commercial and insurance coverage related matters arguing before various federal circuit and state courts of appeal.
Mr. Savino has been cited for numerous honors and awards. In 2018 and 2019, Chambers and Partners named him a “Ranked Practitioner” in Band 3 within the insurance: dispute resolution: insurer in New York category, and in the 2019 edition of the well-respected Legal 500, Mr. Savino was recommended in the “insurance: advice to insurers” category. Additionally, in 2018, Mr. Savino was named a National Law Journal Alternative Dispute Resolution Champion for the second year in a row, as part of a select group of only 46 attorneys nationwide. He has been noted as a Best Lawyer in America by U.S. News & World Report, consistently voted a New York Super Lawyer, and an AV Preeminent rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, a distinction given only to those who possess the highest ethical standards and professional abilities. Mr. Savino is a strong proponent of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). He has significant ADR experience having represented clients in many mediations and arbitrations including a recent transcontinental mediation involving multiple pending suits in different forms. His professional experience coupled with his leadership positions, give him an added dimension and depth in his ability to effectively negotiate and guide parties and counsel to a fair and impartial resolution.
William Savino has been selected to serve on numerous commissions, councils and committees. In 2017, Mr. Savino, a past President of the Nassau County Bar Association, was appointed Chair of the Association’s Judiciary Committee. He has also served as Chair of the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission, an appointment made by the Presiding Justice of the New York State Appellate Division, Second Department. Additionally, he was appointed by Chief Judge, Jonathan Lippman to the Pro Bono Advisory Committee tasked with making recommendations regarding the implementation of pro bono service requirement for attorneys seeking admission to the New York Bar and to the Commercial Division Advisory Council regarding the review of the rules for the New York State Supreme Court, Commercial Division. Mr. Savino was selected as the 2017 Honoree by the YMCA of Long Island for his service to the Long Island community.
An active speaker nationwide, Mr. Savino has presented workshops on a wide range of commercial and insurance topics including fracking liabilities, medical monitoring “no injury” suits, privacy, terrorism-related liabilities, the relationship between primary and excess insurers, and the management of commercial litigations.
