Judge Nevas’ judicial career began with his appointment to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Ronald Reagan in 1985. He held that position until his retirement in 2009. He has presided over a wide range of cases that came before the Federal Court, both jury and non-jury and successfully mediated cases involving insurance, contract disputes, civil rights, various forms of discrimination, torts, aviation accidents, negligence, as well as countless other areas within the jurisdiction of the District Court. He managed a caseload of over 1,000 asbestos disputes and was actively engaged in the settlement of a large majority of them. Further, he presided over numerous major criminal trials involving white collar offices, organized crime, public correction and large-scale drug distribution.
During his tenure on the bench, Judge Nevas served as a member of the Board of Directors and then as President of the Federal Judges Association; a member of the Committee on Court Administration and Case Management of the United States Judicial Conference; and a member of the Committee on Codes of Conduct of the Judicial Conference of the United States. From 1981 to 1985, Judge Alan Nevas served as the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Prior to his appointment as a federal prosecutor, he was engaged in the private practice of law.
Throughout his years in private practice he has handled a wide variety of matters that include real estate transactions, matrimonial matters, estate planning, employment discrimination, civil rights violations, securities fraud, contract disputes, personal injury,
insurance coverage issues, trademark violations, and local zoning issues.
Notably, Judge Nevas was appointed to chair a panel to investigate the cause of the natural gas explosion at the Kleen Energy construction site in Middletown, Connecticut in 2010. The commission was charged to investigate the cause of the explosion and make recommendations to change state regulations and statutes to prevent accidents from occurring in the future. He worked with multiple state agencies, conducted several public meetings and delivered a comprehensive report on the matter. In 2012, he was appointed to chair the Distribution Committee that allocated $7.7 million in funds to families that were impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Judge Nevas served as the elected State Representative from Westport in the Connecticut General Assembly, and in his second and third terms served in turn as Deputy House Majority and Deputy House Minority Leader. He was named one of the Ten Most Outstanding Members of the Connecticut General Assembly in a poll of the Assembly’s membership conducted by Connecticut Magazine, and is a Life Fellow of the American and Connecticut Bar Foundations and an Honoree of the Connecticut Branch of the Federal Bar Council of New York and Connecticut.
