Hon. Patrick Sweeney joined NAM after serving as an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court, Suffolk County, where he presided over jury trials and settlement conferences in a variety of case types including personal injury, medical malpractice, dental malpractice, legal malpractice and automobile accidents. Patrick Sweeney joined NAM after serving as an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court, Suffolk County, where he presided over jury trials and settlement conferences in a variety of case types including personal injury, medical malpractice, dental malpractice, legal malpractice and automobile accidents. Judge Sweeney began his career on the bench when he was elected as District Court Judge in 1997.
As District Court Judge, he presided over numerous jury and non-jury trials. In 2001, he was elected to Family Court where he presided over numerous trials and judicial proceedings, until he was appointed Acting Justice of the Supreme Court. Prior to serving on the bench, Judge Sweeney was engaged in private practice handling primarily litigation matters. He served as special counsel to the Town of Huntington from 1980 through 1997, handling all phases of litigation and appeals. From 1972 through 1979, Judge Sweeney served as Assistant County Attorney for the County of Suffolk where he handled the defense of all major litigation brought against the County, including special proceedings and appeals. His experience also includes working for the Legal Aid Society and Law Guardian’s office, as well as a varied legal practice.
