Hon. Richard B. McQuade, Jr. (Ret.)

The Honorable Richard B. McQuade, Jr. has more than 30 years of experience as a jurist and a litigator and has mediated and/or arbitrated numerous cases involving complex multiparty disputes involving settlements amounting to as much as $500 million. In 1986, he was appointed U.S. District Court Judge, Northern District of Ohio, by President Ronald Reagan where he sat until his resignation in 1989. He also has served by designation on the Sixth Circuit Court. Prior to his judicial service, Judge McQuade was President and Chief Operating Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Ohio, a position he held until 1992. He also served on that company’s Board of Directors for more than 20 years.

Throughout his remarkable career, Judge McQuade has arbitrated and mediated numerous disputes in more than 25 cities throughout the United States. Additionally, he has successfully resolved numerous class action lawsuits involving many Fortune 500 companies and is called upon frequently to provide opinions as to the fairness of class action settlements. Judge McQuade is known to understand the subtleties needed
to craft successful solutions.

Judge McQuade’s reputation is that of being well-versed in the law with a comprehensive knowledge of, and experience in a variety of case types that include commercial litigation and corporate shareholder disputes, insurance coverage and bad faith claims, antitrust-unfair practices, personal injury and wrongful death, environmental actions and toxic torts involving air, ground and waterborne chemical dispersion, professional malpractice claims including legal, medical, architectural, engineering and accounting matters, class action lawsuits, multi-million dollar construction defect claims and employment cases involving Title VII and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) type disputes.

When it comes to complex commercial matters, Judge McQuade has a quick understanding of the issues and nuances of a case and is able to utilize innovative and creative strategies that have resulted in the successful settlement of numerous complex commercial matters.
