NAM IN THE NEWS
New York, NY (April 10, 2018) – Last week, NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation) attended the 2018 American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Dispute Resolution Spring Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference was one of the best attended in years, drawing more than 700 dispute resolution professionals from around the world. The 4-day global event offered advanced educational seminars presented by key thought leaders in the dispute resolution field.
Confronting and Helping to Resolve Intractable Problems
Benjamin G. Davis, ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Chair, welcomed all and stated “This will be an occasion to take stock of our role in finding ways to resolve what may seem to be intractable problems confronting individuals, institutions, society and the world. The conference presenters, dispute resolution professionals across different fields, will highlight how we continue together to help humanity progress. I believe that it is what we do together as dispute resolution professionals that will make the difference for all.”
Presentation of the D'Alemberte Raven Award
Further, Thomas L. Friedman, New York Times journalist and 3-time Pulitzer Prize winning author, was presented with the D'Alemberte Raven Award. The award is the highest honor given by the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution and honors an individual or organization who has through service, research and writing significantly contributed to the ongoing effort to resolving conflicts. This year's award recognizes Mr. Friedman's writings on foreign affairs and globalization that have provoked reflection and discussion. His contributions have helped to understand how we might navigate and respond to the evolving sources of conflict in an increasingly fast-paced interdependent world.
NAM's 360 Degree Participation at This Year's Conference
NAM was honored to participate as both a Diamond-Level Sponsor for this year's event, as well as serving as the exclusive host of the conference's welcome reception on Thursday night. NAM's Honorable Peter P. Skelos welcomed the crowd and kicked off the evening's festivities with opening remarks.
As part of the conference program, Judge Skelos and fellow NAM neutral, Richard P. Byrne, Esq. conducted a 1-hour continuing legal education (CLE) panel discussion entitled, Mediating Construction Defect Claims as Catharsis – Legal and Therapeutic. Construction defect claims are incredibly complex, expensive and exasperating types of litigation. The program addressed the alternative route of ADR as a cost-effective means to resolve these issues faster through mediation. Judge Skelos and Mr. Byrne were joined on the panel by Carolyn Crawford, Director of Construction Claims for Nationwide Insurance. The panel fielded numerous questions from session attendees.
