THE NEW YORK LAW JOURNAL TO PUBLISH HON. LARRY S. SCHACHNER'S ARTICLE ON TRANSITIONING FROM THE BENCH TO PRIVATE MEDIATION IN AN ADR SPECIAL REPORT
NAM is pleased to announce that an article written by Honorable Larry S. Schachner entitled, From the Courthouse to the Conference Room: Transitioning From Supreme Court Judge to Private Mediation, will be published on Monday, August, 7, 2017 by the New York Law Journal as part of its bi-annual Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Special Report. Having recently retired from the bench, Judge Schachner offers a fresh perspective on the differences between settling a case in the courtroom and that of private mediation.
Hon. Schachner served as a judge in the State of New York for nearly 20 years. He began his judicial career presiding over New York City residential landlord-tenant cases before being elected Judge of the Civil Court. In 2007, Justice Schachner was appointed Acting Justice of the Supreme Court and in 2014, he was elected as Justice of the Supreme Court.
In the article, Judge Schachner draws upon his years in the courthouse and offers his views on the benefits of private mediation including its time-efficiency versus the backlogged court system, the motivation of parties to resolve their disputes and the less rigid requirements and formalities that private mediation has to offer. Hon. Schachner acknowledges that the bench was a “perfect training ground” for his career in private mediation and states, “While I tried my share of cases, I believe my biggest strength as a judge has always been my ability to bring parties together to resolve issues and settle disputes…as a private mediator, I am laser-focused on the matter before me and can get into greater detail, analyzing all of the relevant issues.”
Judge Schachner has handled a wide variety of case types that include labor law, medical malpractice, municipal liability, negligence, premises liability, real estate, tort and professional and product liability and personal injury matters. He is available to hear cases in the New York metro area and throughout the United States.
