HON. PETER B. SKELOS AND HOWARD J. KAPLAN, ESQ. TO PARTICIPATE AT A CLE ENTITLED MEDIATION AND ARBITRATION: BEST PRACTICES AND TIPS

Hon. Peter B. Skelos and Howard J. Kaplan, Esq. have been invited to participate in a 2-hour CLE panel discussion on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the Queens County Bar Association. The seminar, entitled Mediation and Arbitration: Best Practices and Tips, will focus on the use of alternative dispute resolution to settle matters in today?s legal landscape.

The presentation will provide attorneys with practical tips on the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of ADR in light of the rising cost of traditional litigation and the backlog of cases in the civil courts. Topics to be addressed include the fundamentals of ADR, the mediation and arbitration processes, what to look for when selecting a neutral and arbitration of personal injury cases.

Prior to joining NAM, Hon. Peter B. Skelos served 11 years as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, 2nd Department. While on the bench, he was known for his keen legal intellect and compassion for those who appeared before him. He has garnered a reputation for treating others in a fair and respectful manner and for arriving at well-reasoned and legally sound decisions.

Howard J. Kaplan, Esq. is the senior trial attorney for Progressive Insurance Company. He brings a unique perspective to the ADR arena having had the benefit of working in both a corporate and legal role for Progressive. Mr. Kaplan has lectured nationally on trial and negotiation skills. As a mediator/arbitrator at NAM, he has the keen ability to bring parties together based on his years of experience as a litigator handling trials throughout the NY Metro area.

Judge Skelos and Mr. Kaplan will be joined on the panel by Hon. Seymour Boyers, former Associate Justice, Appellate Division, 2nd Dept. The CLE will be moderated by Martin Schulman, Esq., Chair of the QCBA Arbitration Committee.
